Short introduction

Hello to all Tennessee Rex lovers and breeders. I am proud to announce my candidacy for the TICA Tennessee Rex Breed Committee! My name is Marjan Boonen and I live in Utrecht, The Netherlands. Currently, I breed the Tennessee Rex (cattery UtrechTrex) and the Devon Rex (cattery Boonland). As a Breed committee member, I will strive to stimulate and support education, as well open communication among breeders, judges, owners and exhibitors. I believe this is vital to ensure healthy growth for our young breed. At the same time I will continue to look for new, reliable breeders in Europe. Let us please keep communicating and helping each other with honest information and the exchange of cats. You may find my full feline curriculum below here.

Extensive introduction

Cat breeding history I started as a cat breeder in Fifé in 2005 with (polydactyl) Maine Coons, importing new foundation Maine Coons from the USA to supply fresh genes for that breed. After Fifé forbade breeding with polydactyl MC’s as of Jan. 2014, I joined Tica and helped promote the full recognition of the polydactyl Maine Coon. I have been an admirer of Tennessee Rex ever since they first appeared. But, not being able to get a Trex in 2006, I added Devon Rex to my cattery. As a staunch supporter of outcrossing pedigree cats, I was able to outcross breeding my Devon Rex in Fifé with house cats and pedigree cats. This is the only way to prevent high inbreeding and a genetic bottle neck in any breed. The fact that this is promoted in the Trex breed standard is a great statement for the cat fancy.

I have attended many courses and lectures, read many books on breeding, health, nourishment and behavior and asked advice from many experienced fellow breeder.

Breeding goals for the Tennessee Rex are:

to strive for the best kind of health, temperament, genetic diversity, socialization, good type, good curls & last but not least SATIN! Our Tennessee Rexes are wonderful, social cats that love interaction with humans, other cats, and other pets. Children are drawn to them immediately and the attraction is mutual. We want to keep that temperament going! I personally find the long hair Trex’ the most attractive. Besides the lovely full red color I hope to breed more of the cinnamon and chocolate colors.

My breeding cats are tested for HCM, PKD (ultrasound), patellar luxation, felv/fiv and umbilical hernia. A full dna test (wisdom panel) is done on most breeding cats to keep track of possible hereditary health risks and to have proof of “difficult” colors. We want to keep our new breed as “clean” as possible and choose breeding cats accordingly! I will strive to make matings with new outcross cats every second or third litter.

Show experience

I have successfully shown all my full Trex breeding cats in Tica as soon as the show room was opened to them. I also was able to show a home bred boy (UtrechTrex Grote Beer) in September 2024 on a Fifé show in The Netherlands to let judges get acquainted with the breed. Before that, I have shown all my MC- and-DRX breeding cats in Fifé and sometimes in Tica. Administrative experience: - secretary Rexkattenclub, Felikat in Fifé since 2015 - secretary Devon Rex breed council in Fifé since 2020 - writer of many articles on cat health and behavior for different cat magazines and websites - I am currently I responsible for uploading pedigrees to the Pawpeds database for the Trex.
